The Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN) programme, in partnership with data.org and funded by the Welcome Trust, combines data science training and experiential learning through a fellowship programme that focuses on country-specific use cases and allows participants to work with an expert to apply the skills they have learned in practice.

The Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN) initiative develops talent in the field of data for the impact on climate and health in Africa. The CAN Fellowship enables emerging data science professionals to acquire the skills necessary to address the challenges at the intersection of climate and health and have a positive impact on the lives of people across the continent.

Over the course of the programme, participants work with host institutions and mentors on a variety of projects. projects to share their data skills, encourage innovative solutions and build a network of data professionals committed to sustainable development. The fellowship includes practical project work, media training and opportunities for fellows to present their work at local, regional and international events.

The fellowship programme includes data science training and practical experience as part of a six-month programme focusing on specific use cases in different African countries. Over three years, the programme aims to build the capacity of 100-200 data practitioners specialising in data science and its application in health, climate and related topics. Fellows also support social impact or public sector organisations in several African countries.

Objectives
  • The CAN scholarship program is a programme 6-month project to support and help build the capacity and skills of National Statistical Systems (NSS), National Statistical Offices (NSO), Ministries of Agriculture, Health or Environment, government departments and agencies or Social Impact Organisations (SIO) in Africa with the aim of building statistical and data capacity at the intersection of climate and health. The scholarship holders support the office teams with a specific use case provided by the office, either through reports, dashboards or software development.
Information on funding
  • Scholarship holders will receive an allowance of 1,500 $ per month for the duration of the scholarship.
Deliverables and outputs
  • Training in the execution of use cases.
  • Drawing up a project plan for the implementation and support of the use case
  • Monthly programme progress reports.
  • Support for use cases specified within the government department or SIO.
  • Sharing skills and knowledge between members of the department team.
  • Participate in peer exchange activities between fellows, departments and organisations.
Eligibility criteria
  • Applicants must have obtained a first university degree and demonstrate their ability to undertake independent research and advanced academic study.
  • Candidates must have 3 years' professional experience in data management, analysis and visualisation.
  • Candidates must have good communication skills and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills.
  • Candidates should have strong expertise in technology, systems development, big data, open data and data science.
  • Candidates must have a practical knowledge of the climate and health contexts of African countries.
  • This is a full-time position. Candidates must be available to carry out their duties. Fellows selected will be expected to participate in various activities and to follow the programme strictly.
