"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

The Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP) is offering a 2021 call for proposals to find new cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary teams ready to do science differently for sustainable impact.

SNAPP funds science that rapidly leads to tangible and lasting benefits for conservation and sustainable development. To achieve this, SNAPP funds teams of 12-15 people from diverse organisations to come together for 3-4 collaborative sessions over a period of 12-24 months. Based on a clearly articulated opportunity for cross-sector collaboration and innovation to influence policy and/or practice, these groups of work develop new ideas, synthesise data relevant to their work and propose rapid solutions. Between sessions, members collaborate remotely; work with long-term implementation partners; identify emerging opportunities for tangible and sustainable change; develop and test tools and products; and publish research.
The programme provides technical support for reproducible synthesis and modelling methods, and the creation of open source tools and products. Over time, the ideas and relationships fostered within the SNAPP teams influence policy at national and international levels and initiate action across all sectors. Due to the continuing uncertainty caused by the global pandemic, SNAPP welcomes innovative models, including virtual and hybrid collaboration spaces.
Teams
A SNAPP team is a multidisciplinary group of experts representing a wide range of sectors, institutions and specialities who would not otherwise come together around a focused and complex challenge. Teams include:
  • Academic experts in areas directly linked to the key issues
  • Representatives of governments, multilateral institutions and the private sector
  • Practitioners from conservation organisations humanitarian, sustainable development, cultural and spiritual activities
Challenges
The SNAPP teams are working to find solutions to these critical challenges:
  • Resilience climate : They are developing nature-friendly solutions to the impacts of climate change, such as drought, storms and rising sea levels.
  • Food and fresh water : They balance the growing demand for food and fresh water with long-term conservation.
  • Ocean sustainability : they are discovering new ways of mitigating the collective impact on the ocean and its various ecosystems.
  • Innovations social : They develop and deploy effective solutions to systemic social and environmental problems.
Information on the funding
SNAPP provides up to US$1 million in total through 4 to 6 approved working groups, led by academic, governmental, multilateral or not-for-profit institutions.
Eligibility criteria
The SNAPP welcomes proposals for working groups on all conservation/sustainable development issues.
