They support the development of innovative digital health services, with a focus on mobile platforms as well as education and capacity building for medical and health personnel.
Information on Health and Wellbeing funding
  • The Foundations will contribute up to a maximum of EUR 90 000 (ninety thousand/00) for each project launched.
  • The contribution will be allocated to cover costs incurred by the CSO(s) (e.g. man-hours of the team involved) and the Innovator(s) (e.g. costs of implementing the pilot project) and to purchase functional services for the field implementation of the project.
Activities
For the Call for Innovators - Health and Well-being, the challenges that have emerged and some examples (not exhaustive) of the fields of activity are given below. The examples are intended to facilitate the identification of Innovators in the challenges covered by the Call:
  • Promote the training of qualified medical and nursing staff : Promote the training of medical and nursing staff, improve the retention of local operators trained during the projects, ensure the stability and continuity of cooperation projects that devote time and resources to their development:
    • Systems, solutions and platforms for training medical and healthcare staff and implementing appropriate procedures;
    • Systems and tools to manage remote learning and monitoring, also in contexts without Internet connection.
  • More effective medical instruments and devices: Technological innovation to achieve more effective medical instruments and devices for patient treatment:
    • Techniques to produce more effective instruments for the treatment of patients with mental disorders;
    • Solutions and tools for access to treatment and effective care for patients with mental disorders.
  • Maintenance of medical equipment and instruments: Technological innovation for improved and more efficient use and maintenance of medical equipment and instruments in the territories:
    • Instruments and procedures to control medical equipment and to produce spare parts and equipment parts, at low cost and in a short time, through 3D printing or other technologies;
    • Innovative techniques and systems to ensure the proper use of equipment by untrained local staff, making instructions and procedures accessible in ways other than paper manuals, including through specific distance learning.
  • Construction of health environments and infrastructures: Technological innovation to improve the construction of health environments and infrastructures, including in the surgical field (e.g. operating theatres, radiology services, ambulatory services):
    • Technologically advanced materials and systems for the construction of healthcare environments and infrastructure, which can be sanitised and meet technical requirements
    • requirements even in situations of scarce energy resources and difficult weather conditions;
    • Systems and tools for the creation and maintenance of care environments to be developed in compliance with the highest medical-scientific protocols and hygiene standards in the surgical field.
  • Collect and organise clinical data: Innovation technology to collect and organise patients' clinical data in a systematic and structured way, taking into account the difficult simultaneous presence of different databases belonging to different institutions that coexist in the territories:
    • Techniques and tools for collecting, transmitting and digitally updating data (e.g. births, vaccinations) through user-friendly devices that can be adopted by staff with little technological skill;
    • Digital techniques and solutions to collect and monitor patient management, administrative and management data, on a long-term basis in health care institutions, also with the contribution of patients visiting the institution;
    • Collection and transmission of data for research, remote monitoring and telemedicine to support the skills of local health care staff at a distance
  • Access to care and communication: Technological and digital innovation to facilitate access to care and ensure a smooth flow of communication between patients, health professionals and the public. communities and health system actors:
    • Solutions and tools to support specific targets, including patients with chronic diseases requiring monitoring, also with home-based solutions;
    • Solutions to activate long-term communication channels between patients and health care facilities, including with patients in hot spots, with the possibility of developing user-friendly information material;
    • Solutions to provide information on the services and facilities available to communities living in areas difficult access, as well as to improve access to antenatal and assisted delivery services.
  • Prevention in local communities and vulnerable groups; Technological innovation to promote prevention in local communities, with particular attention to the mother/child group, taking into account the possible cultural resistance of the beneficiaries:
    • Digital solutions to provide remote information and support on maternity-related topics (pregnancy, postpartum, vaccinations, childcare, nutrition);
    • Digital solutions accessible to the most remote communities for good information on hygiene practices and to raise awareness on the topic of mental disorders and ensure access to related treatment;
    • Solutions, including low-tech solutions, to promote disease and risk prevention for vulnerable groups.
Participation Requirements Health and well-being
The call is open to innovators with projects that, at the date of submission of the application :
  • Are based on initiatives and/or technologies with a TRL -Technology Readiness Level between 3 and 6, European Commission Work Programme 2014-2015;
  • African organisations with ongoing activities in one of the following countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal or Uganda;
  • Italian organisations willing to operate in one of the following countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, Uganda.
