"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

They believe that the rich history of storytelling in Africa, from universal tales to hyper-local fables, provides fertile ground for new creative storytelling. This is an opportunity to reimagine the relevance of these tales to contemporary society and extend them to the global screen: a celebration of Africa's deeply varied culture, folklore and heritage. The competition invites emerging filmmakers from across sub-Saharan Africa to submit entries on the theme of "African folktales, reinvented".

They believe that a great story can come from anywhere and be loved everywhere. Africa has a rich heritage of storytelling and a young population ready to step in and tell the stories of Africa, in all their multiplicity. They are excited by the fresh new voices who are ready to tell the world the stories that have been told to them by previous generations.
