"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Zones

  • A fellow's time will be divided between three key areas:
    • Carry out a personal research project: the fellow will select and design a personal project to be undertaken with the guidance of a Chatham House expert (approximately 60 %).
    • Leadership Programme: this is a key element of all Fellowships. It aims to develop the Fellows' knowledge, networking, self-awareness and to equip them with important skills to build on in their future careers as leaders in their field (approx. 20%).
    • Contribute to ongoing research activities: in collaboration with their host research team and other Chatham House teams as appropriate, Fellows will contribute to existing research priorities in line with the Chatham House mission (approx. 20 %).

Leadership programme

  • All Fellows participate in and contribute to the leadership programme which includes the following elements
    • Intensive integration week
      • Academy Fellowships start with a five-day intensive induction week to familiarise themselves with the elements of the Fellowships, meet their host research programme and have their first personal development coaching session.
    • Discussion seminars
      • In these sessions, Fellows meet and discuss current international business challenges with subject matter experts from Chatham House and beyond. The sessions cover the key substantive and skill areas essential for informed and effective international leadership. Fellows typically chair these sessions and are expected to contribute and learn from the experience of others.
    • Leadership workshops
      • Every two months, Fellows participate in half-day workshops focusing on developing skills in specific aspects of leadership such as "Leadership in a New Role" and "Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship".
    • Project presentations
      • Fellows present updates on their research projects to help develop presentation skills, provide a forum for peer review and analyse problems outside their own area of expertise.
    • Coaching in personal development
      • Fellows have access to individual sessions with a dedicated coach to develop their self-awareness. Fellows work with the coach to set personal development goals that they strive to achieve during their fellowship and beyond.
    • Media training
      • Fellows learn effective interview skills needed for television and radio, culminating in a mock interview from which they receive feedback on style and areas for improvement.
    • Breakfast Briefings "Leadership in the 21st Century
      • All Fellows receive priority access to the 21st Century Leadership Breakfast Series. There, they have the opportunity to discuss leadership experiences and learn in an informal setting with leaders from government, business, media and the non-profit sector.
