Entries are now open for the Conservation Technology Award. The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence's EarthRanger programme (AI2) is committed to helping protected areas and conservation organisations protect wildlife and their habitats through the advancement of technology.

EarthRanger is a software solution that combines real-time data from ranger patrols, remote imagery and various remote sensors. The visualised data is analysed by operational teams and scientists to identify or react to potential wildlife threats, track and study animal movements and understand ecological changes. Developed in partnership with conservation and technology partners, EarthRanger is part of AI2's efforts to fundamentally advance science, medicine and conservation through AI.

Type of subsidy

AI2 seeks to provide two (2) grants, each in the amount of USD 15,000, to organisations that deploy or develop technology to positively impact conservation management, including but not limited to endangered animal safety, animal behaviour research, anti-poaching law enforcement, ecological management and human-wildlife co-existence:

  • Technology adoption grant : This grant is intended for an organisation that adopts technology in a new or innovative way for wildlife conservation purposes.
  • Technology Practitioner Grant This grant is intended for an organisation that develops technology (e.g. software, applications, AI models/algorithms, hardware) to support conservation efforts.
Eligibility criteria
  • All applications will be reviewed by AI2 for compliance with applicable laws and US government guidelines for international grantmaking.
  • All applicants must follow the AI2 Business Partner Code of Conduct.
  • Not-for-profit and for-profit organisations and protected areas managed in whole or in part by a not-for-profit or for-profit organisation are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants may only apply for one (1) grant by selecting either the Technology Adoption Grant or the Technology Practitioner Grant in the online application form.
  • EarthRanger users and non-users are welcome to apply for either grant. There is no requirement or benefit for either grant based on an organization's user status.
  • Organisations and protected areas are eligible to apply.
