This call is supported by the UK International Science Partnerships Fund, managed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. Under this call, funding from the International Science Partnerships Fund is funded by Official Development Assistance (ODA), so applications for funding must be eligible for ODA.
Objectives of the programme and scope of the call
- The aim of this call is to support ODA-eligible international research collaborations between UK humanities and social science researchers and researchers from Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or least developed countries on environmental resilience and climate action. Applications that are not considered eligible for ODA will not be considered in the evaluation process.
- In addition, although it is not a requirement, applications are welcome to work in the humanities and social sciences AND in the natural, medical and engineering sciences. The Academy particularly encourages applications from the humanities.
- The Academy intends to be able to support policy-relevant research, both new research and research that builds on existing or ongoing research on environmental resilience and climate action.
- The Academy expects the awards presented under the :
- To provide opportunities for researchers based in the UK and Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries to develop and/or deepen international research collaborations;
- Conduct relevant and ODA-eligible research on environmental resilience and climate action that provides clear information and results for action at local, national and/or regional levels in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa and Turkey. Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries ;
- Co-creates and engages with the local and/or national community, societal, business and/or political stakeholders to design, develop and integrate research results.
- This call focuses on environmental resilience and climate action. The Academy wishes to support a range of policy thinking related to this challenge. The Academy has no pre-determined ideas about the exact type of project, outcomes and dissemination of the research, other than that it must be policy relevant. Rather, the onus is on applicants to convince the Academy that their projects provide real added value to meet the objectives of the programme and the scope of the call and provide valuable information and insights relevant to the policy challenges of environmental resilience and climate action.
- Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, and climate action is essential to support inclusive economies and societies in the future. Evidence from the social sciences and human are essential to support this agenda and determine how they can shape a positive future. The Academy wishes to support policy research in the humanities and social sciences that will help demonstrate the importance of women in building climate resilience and empower them to deliver climate solutions in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines and the South. Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or least developed countries.
- Through this call, the Academy seeks to support awards that address how environmental resilience and climate action are formulated and promoted across diverse sectors, for diverse groups and communities, and that include diverse approaches to action and resilience, and reflect on how to build capacity. and capacity for resilience, action, adaptation and mitigation.
Duration and start of the award
- The projects are scheduled to take 18 months to complete and are due to start by the end of June 2024.
- The call should be able to support at least 3 to 5 awards.
Value of financing
- The total funding available per grant under this call is up to £200,000 over 18 months. Within this limit of £200,000 over 18 months, the grant is offered at 80 % FEC (i.e. the total contribution requested from the Academy cannot exceed £200,000 and the total value of the project at 100 % FEC cannot exceed £250,000).
Eligibility criteria
- Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Each project will be led by a named Principal Investigator (PI). The PI must be a researcher in a social science or humanities discipline. The PI is expected to lead the research and management of the project and is responsible for the overall reporting requirements of the project.
- The principal investigator must be of postdoctoral status or above (or have equivalent research experience). The Principal Investigator must hold an established role at an eligible university or research institute in the UK, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries. The principal investigator's position must last for at least the duration of the grant funded by the Academy.
- The principal investigator may devote a minimum of 20 % of his/her time and a maximum of 100 % of his/her time to the grant. The time devoted to the grant may change during the course of the grant but may not be less than 20 % for the entire duration of the grant. Staff employed on the grant may be full-time or part-time, regardless of the amount of time that the stock exchange dedicated to the stock market.
- PIs may not simultaneously hold more than one British Academy award of a comparable nature.
- A person may not be the principal investigator of more than one offer under this programme.
- Applicants can be of any nationality, but must be based in the UK, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries.
- Applicants must hold a doctorate (or have equivalent research experience).
- The prizes are accessible to private individuals and take place in an institutional context.
- Applications under this call will not be accepted if the applicant or any collaborator has outstanding reports or claims of expenditure that have yet to be submitted to the Academy as a result of previous awards.
- Duplicate applications to several British Academy funding programmes will not be accepted.
- Co-applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Must include at least one researcher based in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries if the Principal Investigator is based in the UK or one researcher based in the UK if the Principal Investigator is based in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries.
- Must be a post-doctoral fellow or above (or have equivalent research experience).
- May include other researchers based in the UK or abroad at any stage of their career.
- No individual may be a co-applicant on more than two projects under this call (nor may a principal investigator be a co-applicant on more than one other project).
- Institutions : The prize must be awarded at an institution recognised by the Academy. The following types of organisation will be eligible to apply to host the prize:
- Higher education institutions that have received funding from one of the UK's higher education funding bodies.
- Research institutes (RIs), for which the councils of research have established a long-term involvement as the main funder of the national research base.
- Approved independent research organisations.
- Public sector research bodies.
- Research organisations based in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries that have been approved as eligible by the British Academy no later than 2 weeks before the closing date of this call and have answered the due diligence question on the application form.
- All grants will be paid to the institution employing the PI, not to the individual researchers involved. Institutions must be formally recognised by the British Academy before the proposal is submitted.
