The challenge of adaptation solutions for young Africans. The Global Centre for Adaptation (GCA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have development (AfDB) have joined forces in a joint mission to accelerate action on climate adaptation under the Accelerated Action on Adaptation in Africa Programme (AAAP).
With the African Youth Adaptation Solutions (YouthADAPT) Challenge, the AAAP will inspire and support the commercialisation of climate change adaptation solutions driven by the entrepreneurial spirit of young African entrepreneurs in Africa. The YouthADAPT Challenge demonstrates the effectiveness and equity of involving young African entrepreneurs in adaptation actions, the need to support "missing middle" businesses in terms of funding, with winners receiving a business grant of up to 100,000 $ each as well as the opportunity to further develop their businesses through business support and acceleration.
The YouthADAPT Challenge is open to solutions (products, services, tools or ideas) focused on adapting to climate change and increasing resilience. Eligible solutions may represent :
- An adaptation solutions business that has not been scaled up and is not widely used
- An existing resilience and adaptation solutions company or product
- A commercially viable way of raising awareness or widening adoption of solutions adaptation.
Information on financing
The YouthADAPT Challenge will bring together solutions for adapting young people African entrepreneurs by selecting the best, offering companies a grant of up to 100,000 $ and an opportunity to fully develop and commercialise their businesses via a 12-month acceleration programme.
Eligibility criteria
Companies must be :
- Run by young people with candidates aged between 18 and 35
- Providing climate change adaptation or resilience solutions to real-life challenges
- Legally registered and operating in Africa
- Able to show income for at least two years
