The German-African Network of Excellence for Science (AGNES) is pleased to announce the call for applications for the AGNES Intra-African Mobility Grant for Young Researchers to strengthen the scientific capacity and networking of young researchers in Africa through the active cooperation of AGNES and potential AGNES members.

La stock exchange The AGNES intra-African mobility scheme enables PhD students from sub-Saharan African countries to spend 1 to 2 months researching in a university/research institute in another country. country Sub-Saharan Africa (hereinafter referred to as the host institution), where they will collaborate with an experienced researcher (hereinafter referred to as the scientific host). The proposed research must form part of the doctoral research work, including, but not limited to, laboratory work, laboratory studies, use of library resources and writing the thesis or part of the thesis. Eligible young researchers must demonstrate the relevance of their work to the future development of their country of origin in sub-Saharan Africa.

The grant aims to be as financially complete as possible for a short stay outside the applicant's home country, covering travel and subsistence costs and including a research allowance to the host institute on request to cover part of the research expenses.

Scope of programmes
  • AGNES manages two intra-African mobility grants for young researchers for which applications can be submitted directly by interested and qualified candidates from sub-Saharan Africa:
    • General intra-African mobility grants AGNES for young researchers (generally for male and female applicants)
    • AGNES special intra-African mobility grants for young researchers (for female applicants ONLY)
  • Candidates may apply for any of the following grantsMale applicants can only apply for AGNES general intra-African mobility grants for young researchers (generally for both male and female applicants). AGNES encourages applications from all fields of research (Sciences, Humanities, Law and Social Sciences).
Information on funding
  • A maximum grant of between €2,300 and €3,000 is available for stays of 1 or 2 months respectively, depending on the length of the stay.
Eligibility criteria
  • Direct applications from young researchers who have published at least 1 article from their thesis (in a non-predatory journal) will be considered for the two AGNES mobility grants.
  • The applicant :
    • may belong to any academic discipline but must be officially registered as a doctoral student at a university/tertiary institute in sub-Saharan Africa at the time of application.
    • must be a national of a sub-Saharan African country, and
    • must have at least one article already published from their thesis work (in a non-predatory journal).
  • To avoid any ambiguity, they will only consider journals indexed by SCOPUS and Web of Science.
  • Candidates must clearly demonstrate that their work is relevant to development in sub-Saharan African countries and cannot be carried out in the country of origin. Only applicants with an identified scientific host and a mutually agreed proposal/work schedule will be considered for the grant.
  • There is no geographical quota for the AGNES grant in sub-Saharan Africa. All eligible applicants from sub-Saharan countries are eligible to apply for these grants. However, AGNES will particularly welcome applications from eligible candidates from these under-represented countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Angola, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Congo Kinshasa (DRC), Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique, Mauritius, Mauritania, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe.
