- The rate of grant the highest is approved after successful completion of the professorial examination process (habilitation) and/or at the earliest after a positive interim evaluation for a junior professorship. For candidates from academic systems that do not consider habilitations, the Foundation recognises the holding of a tenured position as Associate Professor or Full Professor or Distinguished Professor (in the American system) or Lecturer or Reader/Professor (in the Commonwealth system) as equivalent to successful completion of junior professor examinations. The Foundation's administration may, in individual cases, assess other national qualification levels.

Types and scope of financing
- Depending on the type of project, grants for research projects involve projectThe cost of personnel, travel, equipment and/or other costs.
- Applicants must be actively involved in the research work underpinning the project. Project staff on research projects can only be funded by doctoral or research grants. A fundamental prerequisite for the award of a grant is that project staff carry out their own research, which is published under their name. Simultaneous receipt of a salary or retirement pension and a research grant is not possible.

Scholarship rules
- Only full-time scholarships are available (max. 5 hours per week in another job).
- A grant cannot be awarded if the person also receives a salary or pension.
- Project participants must carry out their own research, which is then published under their own name.
- Assistance can be provided for a minimum of one month and a maximum of 24 months.
