The Spencer Foundation is now accepting applications for the Education Research Small Grants programme to support education research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly designed for projects of between one and five years.

The aim of this programme is to support rigorous, intellectually ambitious and technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing issues and compelling opportunities in education.
This programme supports proposals from multiple disciplinary and methodological perspectives, both national and international, from academics at different stages of their careers. They anticipate that proposals will cover a wide range of topics and disciplines that innovatively investigate issues central to education, including for example education, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, law, economics, history or neuroscience, among others.
Information on financing
Proposed budgets for this programme are limited to 50,000 $ in total and may not include indirect cost charges in accordance with Spencer's policy. Eligible researchers may also apply for additional funding for course release.
Eligibility criteria
- The proposals to the programme educational research grants must be for university research projects aimed at studying education.
- Proposals for activities other than research are not eligible (e.g. program evaluations, professional development, curriculum development, scholarships, capital projects).
- In addition, proposals for research studies in fields other than education are not eligible.
- Principal Investigators (PIs) and co-investigators applying for a small educational research grant must have a doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or appropriate experience in a profession related to educational research.
- Although graduate students can be part of the research team, they cannot be named principal investigator or co-principal investigator on the proposal.
- The PI must be affiliated with a not-for-profit organisation or a public/governmental institution that is willing to serve as the administering organisation if the grant is awarded.
- The Spencer Foundation does not make grants directly to individuals. Examples include nonprofit or public colleges, universities, school districts and research centres, as well as other nonprofit organizations with an IRS 501(c)(3) determination (or equivalent nonprofit status if the organization is outside the United States).
- Proposals are accepted in the United States and abroad, however, all proposals must be submitted in English and budgets must be proposed in US dollars.
