African citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 are invited to submit their essays for this year's youth leadership competition, organised as part of the African Leadership Forum (ALF) 2023.

The competition aims to provide an opportunity for Africa's youth and the next generation of leaders in the region to share their views on leadership in promoting intra-African trade to unlock Africa's agricultural potential.

Next year's FAL will be jointly convened by H.E. Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, FAL Patron and Fourth President of the United Republic of Tanzania and H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary General of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA), in Accra, Ghana, on 23 and 24 February. The theme will be "Promoting intra-African trade to unlock Africa's agricultural potential".

  • The tests should answer the following question:
    • If you were an African leader, how would you promote intra-African trade to unlock Africa's agricultural potential?
Price details
  • Up to five winners will be selected. The winners will be asked to create posters to visually describe their ideas. The posters will be presented at the FAL.
  • The winners will be presented with their awards at an award ceremony to be held at the FAL Gala Dinner on 23 February 2023. The ceremony will be attended by senior leaders from across Africa, representing the public, private and third sectors.
  • A grand prize of USD 2,000 will be awarded to the winner, who will be invited to read their essay at the dinner.
  • Selected winners residing outside Ghana will need to have valid travel documents to travel. UONGOZI will cover the costs of their travel, including visa fees, airfare and accommodation.
Eligibility criteria
  • It is open to all African citizens (including the diaspora) between the ages of 18 and 25.
  • All essays must be typed. The minimum length is 500 words and the maximum length is 700 words. The format should be single-spaced, Arial 11 font size with page margins of 1 inch (2.54 cm) for each margin, and sent as a Microsoft Word document.
  • Applicants must also submit a written declaration of originality and ownership of intellectual property rights.
  • Essays will be judged on the basis of originality, creativity, use of language and relevance to the competition theme.
