At Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS), One Young World is proud to support the Lead 2030 challenge for SDG 4 to reduce gender disparities in order to create a more gender equitable education system globally and empower girls to transform communities around the world.
As a company, they truly believe in investment and the development of the next generation of women leaders despite the discouraging statistics around the world. BMS believes that everyone, regardless of gender, has equal access to education and future opportunities. To this end, BMS welcomes solutions that embrace intersectionality to deepen understanding and capacity to improve the real-life experiences of marginalised groups in STEM.
Sustainable Development Goal 4 aims to close this gap, in particular target 4.5, which aims to eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for vulnerable people, including people with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations. .
This challenge welcomes solutions from young innovators that include interventions such as :
- Remove barriers to women's and girls' access to education in areas where there are significant gender gaps.
- Educate government, employers, academic institutions and family members about the business case for gender equity.
- Eliminate gender and other stereotypes from learning materials and teaching approaches.
- Create a teacher mentoring/training programme focusing on gender-sensitive pedagogies and invest in platforms that help women from all backgrounds to find a professional career in STEM.
- Invest in girls' STEM education through funding programmes and scholarships.
- Create affordable distance learning opportunities that prioritise girls' safety.
