"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Nominations are now open for the Front Line Defenders 2022 Award.

The Front Line Defenders Award is aimed at HRDs for whom visibility can contribute to their security and who have not yet achieved major international recognition for their human rights work.

Front Line Defenders was founded in Dublin in 2001 with the specific aim of protecting Human Rights Defenders at Risk (HRDs), people who work non-violently for some or all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) . Front Line Defenders responds to the protection needs identified by HRDs themselves.

Front Line Defenders has its headquarters in Dublin, an EU office in Brussels and field staff based regionally in the Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East.

Front Line Defenders provides rapid and practical support to human rights defenders at risk through :

  • international advocacy on behalf of human rights defenders at risk, including emergency support for those in immediate danger;
  • subsidies to cover the practical security needs of human rights defenders;
  • training and documentary resources on security and protection, including digital security;
  • rest, respite and other opportunities for human rights defenders under extreme stress ;
  • opportunities for networking and exchange between human rights defenders, including at the biennial platform in Dublin;
  • the annual Front Line Defenders award for human rights defenders at risk;
