Context Matters 2022 research grants programme

CODE, in partnership with the International Literacy Association (ILA), is pleased to announce the fifth call for research proposals for the Context Matters 2022 research grant programme to support research that is clearly situated in local contexts and recognises the multifaceted and complex relationships between the global in education.

Main areas of interest

Through its Context Matters programme, CODE funds research initiated, designed and undertaken by African researchers. The main aspects of the programme are building the research capacity of African academics, promoting knowledge sharing and informing practice and policy.

Areas of investigation

Proposals must address at least one of these three areas of investigation:

  • Teacher training
  • Literacy practices
  • Digital literacy
Themes

In 2022, Context Matters is primarily interested in research projects that address one or more of the following broad themes:

  • advance local literacy practices;
  • Advance knowledge specific to the context ;
  • the intersection between literacy, education and girls' empowerment ;
  • factors and/or interventions that contribute to reducing barriers to quality education for women and girls: with disabilities; in situations of fragility, conflict, refugees and crisis; and/or in relation to the impact of the COVID pandemic.
  • the role of initial teacher training and in-service professional development in enhancing educational opportunities for girls and vulnerable populations;
  • the relationship between school, home and community and the role it plays in strengthening culturally relevant literacies;
  • the impact of digital literacy and the use of technology in teacher training and classroom learning;
  • aim to contribute to sustainable change.
Context Matters is designed to :
  • To support the work of African academics and researchers addressing the issues identified in collaboration with African literacy and teacher training communities.
  • Advancing research in Africa by Africans in a way that is responsive and respectful of participants and their communities.
  • To strengthen the research capacity, knowledge and recommendations of those working in the African context.
  • Funding research initiated, designed and undertaken by local teams.
  • Promote international partnerships and alliances that strengthen Africa's capacity to achieve the United Nations' sustainable development goals in the areas of education and gender equality.
  • Build a body of evidence that can be used to support education policy recommendations at local, regional or national level.
Research projects

In 2022, CODE and ILA are primarily interested in research projects related to one or more of the following:

  • Explore the intersection between literacy, education and girls' empowerment.
  • Study the impact of digital literacy and the use of technology in teacher training and classroom learning.
  • Study the role that initial teacher training and in-service professional development play in enhancing educational opportunities for girls and vulnerable populations.
  • Advancing local literacy practices.
  • Advancing context-specific knowledge.
  • Explore the relationship between school, home and community and the role this relationship can play in strengthening culturally relevant literacies.
  • To explore the factors and/or interventions that contribute to reducing barriers to quality education for women and girls: with disabilities; in situations of fragility, conflict, refugees and crisis; and/or in relation to the impact of the COVID pandemic.
Information on financing
  • The grant is issued in Canadian dollars up to a maximum of 10,000.00 $.
  • Studies can be of any length but are expected to cover a two-year period.

Eligibility criteria for Context Matters 2022 research grants
  • Context Matters welcomes proposals from researchers, academics and educators who live and work in the education sector in the eligible countries.
  • Funded researchers must be affiliated and/or collaborating with an academic institution. All proposals must reflect current professional research standards and must explain how they will comply with ethical standards and procedures for research involving human participants.
  • Research proposals must clearly indicate how the results will contribute to or fill a gap in existing knowledge and understanding. Context Matters does not fund the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) components of existing programmes.
