CATALYTIC GRANTS APN 2022

The Africa Philanthropy Network (APN) is the only continental network of organisations and individuals in Africa and its diaspora that promotes a culture of philanthropic giving. Since 2009, the AFN has been conceived as a space for African institutions to interrogate and intervene in the power dynamics that shape the impact of resource mobilisation, distribution and expenditure on the possibilities for transformative change in Africa. APN's mission is to reclaim power and elevate the practice of African philanthropy. APN works with its members and other CSOs to promote the voice and action of African philanthropy. APN achieves this by strengthening solidarity and a coordinated response in the African philanthropic landscape, and by increasing its voice and visibility, and influence the power of civil society actors and leaders to advocate and unleash the potential of individual and community philanthropy. The AFN, through catalytic grants, aims to generate new knowledge and therefore narratives that recognise and promote the value of African philanthropy.

Our Catalytique grants support the initiative that :

  • To present and elevate the role of existing and emerging models of African philanthropy in people-owned development and in response to African agency.
  • Catalysing the culture and potential of national philanthropic giving as a driver of social change.

Specific activities may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Production of stories aimed at understanding the potential role of African giving models. The use of the framework for examining African philanthropic models: one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, many-to-many, is strongly encouraged.
  • Present individual and/or community philanthropic organisations that seek to mobilise national resources and foster the growth of individual philanthropy for social change.
  • Documentation of initiatives and new strategies for resource mobilisation, alternative financing, community-led development, etc.
  • Present gender equality and social inclusion initiatives targeting women, young people and other marginalised population groups.
  • A toolbox, art and messages that create dialogue and cultivate the African culture of giving for social and systemic change.
