Knowledge Action Change (K A C) is pleased to announce the launch of the 6th K-A-C Global Tobacco Harm Reduction Scholarship Programme.


K-A-C has developed a set of fellowships to ground researchers in the theory and practice of tobacco harm reduction (THR). The scholarships will commence at the Global Nicotine Forum (GNF) Conference, to be held in Warsaw, Poland, from 15-17 June 2023.

The scholarship programme gives priority to applications from low- and middle-income countries.

Enhanced scholarships

K A C also runs an enhanced scholarship programme. Enhanced scholarships can be applied for by anyone who has successfully completed all elements of the basic scholarship programme in previous years. Six enhanced scholarships are available each year. The enhanced programme aims to encourage more in-depth projects than the entry-level programme, and also aims to facilitate participants' personal development. Up to half of the enhanced scholar stipend can be used for a scholar's personal development.

Advanced researchers can expect to receive:

  • Assistance in refining their proposals.
  • Travel to and from Warsaw to attend the Global Nicotine Forum (GFN).
  • Accommodation for the entire NSG period, including additional days for university students.
  • Per diem for the duration of the GFN.
  • An allowance of up to 25,000 $ to undertake the project and for personal development.
  • Continuation of the mentoring programme, with an expert mentor.
  • Ongoing support from the grants programme manager.
  • Help and advice on appropriate paths for personal development.
  • Problem-solving assistance - both practical and academic.
What can successful candidates expect?
  • Participation in the GFN 2023 (if possible, otherwise possible due to the current pandemic, all learning activities will take place online).
  • An opportunity to hear the experiences of former researchers.
  • Help in identifying the "next steps" in a possible career in the field of THP.
  • A tailor-made school programme.
  • Mentoring and expert support throughout the scholarship programme.
  • The opportunity to show the results of your project at the GFN or a similar event in 2024.
Conditions
  • Availability
    • All scholarship holders must be available between 13 and 18 June 2023.
  • Learning
    • All scholarship holders must attend induction courses (at GFN'23 and online).
  • Reports
    • All grant holders will be required to provide a 6-month progress report and an 11-month project summary.
  • Share
    • Some academics may be invited back to the GFN or a similar event in 2024 to share their knowledge and experience.
What types of proposals are they looking for?

Indicative examples of the types of project proposals the programme would like to receive

  • Exploratory research into HIP priorities in a country.
  • Design a research project on the nature or use of THP products.
  • Enhance the candidate's understanding of science and scientific skills through links with or placement within a THR research team or organisation.
  • Design and launch an intervention project to improve public and/or professional understanding of THP and related projects.
  • Form an organisation to advance research into THP.
  • Development of a PTH intervention project in a medico-social environment.
  • Produce and distribute one or more films or other media containing credible and accurate information about THP.
  • Organisation of workshops and training events on THP.
  • Develop scientific communication skills related to THR.
  • Writing a research paper or other material for academic publication on THR.
  • Establish a website and/or other media resources to improve understanding of THP.
  • Examine how the poorest countries could overcome the challenges presented by "high-tech" HRT initiatives.
