The African Union Commission launched the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) - Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Programme in partnership with the Kofi Annan Foundation on 25 May 2020, following its approval by the African CDC Board of Directors in March 2018.


The aim is to support ambitious African public health leaders (Fellows) in acquiring advanced skills and competencies to develop strategies, manage and lead public health programmes that will transform public health in Africa.

Africa CDC will provide all learning and development materials and cover all costs associated with the Fellowship, including travel, per diem and insurance during residential placements. Fellows will be supported to ensure that they have the appropriate software for online learning.

Why apply for the scholarship?

The programme targets ambitious leaders with a background in any area of public health, including but not limited to One Health, human medicine, finance, health policy, animal health or environmental health. These are leaders who want to develop advanced skills in leading impactful health initiatives, using health diplomacy, as well as improving their ability to develop bold, strategic and achievable goals to propel Africa towards achieving Agenda 2063. Format of the Health Leadership Programme scholarship

A total of up to eight weeks of residential placement in various key institutions, including Africa CDC/African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and WHO AFRO headquarters in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. The remainder of the year will be spent in the fellow's home country attending online sessions, carrying out individual projects and completing assignments. Fellows will be paired with experienced mentors and coaches to support their ongoing engagement, learning and networking.

What does the stock market include?

The grant will support 12 months of development professional advanced leadership in public health that includes skills in health diplomacy, change management, policy influence, among others. Fellows will be supported by experienced experts in relevant fields from Africa and the diaspora. By the end of the programme, Fellows will have developed skills in:

  • for competent leadership styles that influence and empower others to achieve ambitious multidimensional health goals;
  • Define and develop a viable strategic vision with bold but achievable goals for positive health outcomes;
  • for comprehensive and competent leadership on a global scale, with attributes such as vision, resilience, flexibility and efficiency
  • guiding the complex environment of public health practice to achieve and maintain a positive impact; and in health policy, negotiation, partnerships and health diplomacy
Eligibility criteria Health Leadership Programme
  • Scholarship holders admitted to the programme will be public health professionals from African Union Member States who will contribute to and lead the implementation of a new public health order for Africa, and in turn mentor and develop the next generation of public health leaders for the continent.
  • Applicants for the scholarship must :
    • be a citizen of a Member State of the African Union ;
    • have a postgraduate degree in a relevant field of public health;
    • have relevant professional experience in any area of public health, including, but not limited to, health, medicine, finance, health economics, health policy, animal health or environmental health;
    • have a full-time job in any field of public health, in a private or public institution in Africa ;
    • have a good track record or be able to demonstrate the potential for effective public health leadership where they can have a positive impact on the public health outcomes of populations.
