One Young World is seeking applications for the Afri-Plastics Challenge for the creation or early stage development of new products, technologies and/or services to encourage the reduction or elimination of plastic use in sub-Saharan Africa.
By the end of the Challenge, successful community products and services will have demonstrated a sustainable approach to reducing plastic dependency that also supports the empowerment of women and girls.
One Young World challenge statement announces the Afri-Plastics challenge
- We are looking to create new products or the development of products, technologies and/or services at an early stage to encourage the reduction or elimination of plastic use in sub-Saharan Africa.
- By the end of the Challenge, successful community products and services will have demonstrated a sustainable approach to reducing plastic dependency that also supports the empowerment of women and girls.
Information on financing
In March 2023, three winners will be selected and awarded the following prizes:
- First place: £750,000
- Second place: £250,000
- Third place: £100,000
Eligibility criteria One Young World announces the Afri-Plastics challenge
- The candidates must have a new or early-stage idea that aims to reduce or eliminate the use of plastic in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Applicants can be formally incorporated and operating in sub-Saharan Africa as a registered company or NGO, but applications from individuals and community groups will also be accepted.
- Applicants may be an individual, a single entity (organisation or community group), an African partnership or an international partnership. For partnership applications, the nominated lead applicant must operate in sub-Saharan Africa.
