"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

The Pan Africa Youth Leadership programme began in 2013 and directly supports the US foreign policy goal of youth empowerment and development by equipping exchange participants with the knowledge and skills to become active and responsible members of their communities.

The Youth Leadership Programs examine democratic principles in American civil society and provide leadership development training. Participants are expected to take part in leadership and service workshops, community site visits related to program themes and sub-themes, interactive training, presentations, high school visits, local cultural activities and other activities designed to achieve the stated goals of the program, while living with American families for a significant period of the exchange. Additional opportunities for participants to interact meaningfully with their American peers must be included. Follow-up activities with participants are an integral part of the programme, as students apply the knowledge and skills they have gained by planning and carrying out service projects in their home communities.
