"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Applications are now open for the Emerging Wildlife grant programme Conservation Leaders (EWCL) to design and implement a wildlife conservation group project.

Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders minimize the costs of training thanks to donations in kind and support from foundations. They expectMaintenance Participants capitalise on training development support programmes or staff development training opportunities provided by their organisation to pay for these costs when they are available. However, your ability to contribute to course costs with organisational support DOES NOT factor into whether or not you are accepted onto the programme.

Successful candidates are selected on the basis of their enthusiasm, skills and vision. They seek diverse candidates from non-profit organizations, foundations, federal and state governments, and the private sector. Applicants should be interested in all three components of the course: professional networking and mentoring opportunities, leadership training and wildlife conservation campaign skills, and implementing a wildlife conservation project as a team. Participants will be expected to spend time throughout the two-year period designing and implementing a group wildlife conservation project. Applicants must have at least three years' experience in wildlife conservation, with at least 15 years in the profession ahead of them.

Benefits

EWCL participants will benefit from :

  • Mentoring opportunities with experienced conservation professionals ;
  • Networking opportunities for emerging leaders and their teams organizations to create strong peer support for successful long-term careers;
  • Opening up opportunities for "cross-pollination" between different NGOs, foundations, private and public sector groups involved in wildlife conservation, thus breaking down the traditional challenges of competition and communication between different sectors of the wildlife conservation community;
  • Practical experience of comprehensive conservation campaigns, including all aspects of implementation from start to finish and evaluation; and
  • Leadership and skills training on wide-ranging topics relevant to the real-life work experience of early-career professionals.

Eligibility criteria

  • The two-year training programme includes one week of training each year, as well as a two-day final training and graduation ceremony. Throughout the two years, participants will work in teams to develop, implement and evaluate a wildlife conservation project in the United States or around the world.
