Small Business Research. The Innovate UK is pleased to launch the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) - Vaccines for Epidemic Diseases: Ready for Clinical Development and Regulatory Submit to Enhance Clinic

al and Regulatory Preparation of Vaccines against diseases that have emerge potential in a low or middle revenue country.


The aim of this competition is to support the development of candidate vaccines and platform technologies. This will enable them to undergo clinical development and, ultimately, regulatory approval.

Small Business Research

Projects may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • work to create a set of regulations that can be approved by the appropriate regulatory or ethics authority, e.g. the MHRA and ethics committees, to enable future work packages to start as soon as funding is available
  • completion of work on preclinical and non-clinical tests and supporting technology packages to facilitate the transition from laboratory to clinical trial activities
  • separate work packages to develop the manufacture of drug substances and drug products
  • separate work packages to enable the development clinical trials, including trial development, clinical design and production of regulatory documents
  • ideas to increase the technical or economic utility or acceptance of vaccines and therefore their availability or likely use in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)
  • improve the acceptability or potential deployment of vaccines, in particular by eliminating obstacles such as reluctance to vaccinate
Information on the funding
  • A total of £10 million, including VAT, has been allocated to this competition.
  • Projects can have a total cost of up to £500,000 including VAT and a maximum duration of 12 months.
Eligibility criteria Small Business Research
  • To carry out a project, you can :
    • be an organisation of any size
    • working alone or with others from companies, educational researchresearch and technology organisations or the third sector as subcontractors
  • Contracts will be awarded to a single legal entity only.
  • They are looking for proposals from organisations that can demonstrate a route to market for their solution. These organisations may sub-contract the work to other organisations. This work will always be the responsibility of the prime contractor.
