"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Main areas of interest

The Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit - MARS 2022 will be held in Dubai with the aim of empowering women and youth in research.

The summit will be a unique opportunity for MARS Reseach Award winners to share their research results and findings. It is also an opportunity for networking and career development. The Summit will provide a platform where they can discuss and create an environment for better research at the Ministerial Panel to be held on 15 November 2022.

The annual summit aims to contribute to research capacity building in the African research community, with a particular focus on "The Role of Scientific Research in Addressing Cancer and Vaccine Development - Two Emerging Challenges in Africa".

On another note, the organising committee will present the "Best Young African Researcher Award" and the "Best African Woman Researcher Award" to recognise the outstanding contribution of African women scientists in order to promote women in research and advance their contribution to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The Annual Summit - MARS will open a discussion with Ministries of Health, Education, Information, Science and Technology and Gender from across Africa to define policies to empower women and youth in STEM and to address the vital role of research in improving and sustaining population health with a particular focus on how to translate knowledge into action - the "knowledge gap" - to improve health and impact society.

Eligibility criteria

All applicants must be primarily based in African research institutes and universities, although collaboration within and outside Africa is encouraged.

Abstract submission details
