The Japan Fund for Global Environment (JFGE) provides a grant to a non-governmental organisation (NGO)/non-profit organisation (NPO) engaged in environmental activities.


 

The Japan Fund for Global Environment (JFGE), a division of the Japanese Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency (ERCA), was set up in 1993 with an initial endowment from the Japanese government and from contributions the private sector, including individuals and private companies.

    • Objective: Subsidy to support local projects rooted in the site as a self-sufficient project
    • Grant period : Maximum 3 years (one term per organisation)
    • Organisation criteria
      • At least 1 year's experience in a field related to the proposed project
      • The organisation has received an entry grant in the last three years or has never received a JFGE grant.
    • Project criteria
      • Project to further environmental conservation
      • Project to continue a similar project
      • Cooperation with various stakeholders to expand the project
    • Range of subsidy amounts (per year) Minimum JPY 500,000 - Maximum JPY 3,000,000
  • General subsidy
    • Objective: Grant to support organisational growth by efficiently carrying out projects through skills development
    • Duration of the grant : 3 years maximum (a two-year break is required for an organisation that has received a regular grant for two consecutive terms)
    • Organisational criteria : At least 3 years' experience in a field related to the proposed project
    • Project criteria
      • Project to further environmental conservation
      • Project involving a new problem, a new subject or a new methodology
    • Range of subsidy amount (per year): Minimum JPY 2,000,000 - Maximum JPY 6,000,000

  • Protecting, conserving and restoring nature
  • Forest conservation and tree/grass planting
  • Anti-desertification
  • Environmental conservation farming
  • Mitigating and adapting to climate change
  • Building a recycling society
  • Air, water and soil conservation
  • Comprehensive environmental education
  • Comprehensive environmental conservation projects
  • Restoration projects
  • Other environmental conservation projects
Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • The organisation must be a non-governmental organisation (NGO) or a non-profit organisation (NPO)
  • The organisation must have articles of association or equivalent bylaws.
  • The organisation must have a well-established board of directors and work teams that make decisions for the organisation and implement the proposed project.
  • The organisation must have an accounting structure capable of keeping the accounts and auditing itself.
  • The organisation must have an office that serves as a base for their project
  • The organisation must prove that it has sufficient capacity to carry out the proposed project by presenting solid evidence, such as the previous project's activity report and achievements.
