USADF invites proposals for grants and local support

The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) is inviting African cooperatives, producer groups and businesses to propose grants and local support for innovative solutions that expand their own capacity to increase incomes, create jobs, improve farmers' incomes and achieve sustainable market growth.

Grants will support solutions that extend your organisations' own capacity to increase income, create jobs, improve farmers' incomes and achieve sustainable market-based growth.

USADF is accepting applications from the following countries:

  • Burkina Faso
    • Only applications from agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and formalized agricultural processors in Burkina Faso working directly in the cashew, honey/bee wax, maize, rice, shea butter and livestock sectors will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will be an asset. This includes, among others, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Burundi
    • Only applications from agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and formalized agricultural processors in Burundi that are directly involved in the coffee, rice, oil palm, potato and cattle breeding systems integrated with these sectors will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will be an asset. This includes, among others, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Ivory Coast
    • Only applications from agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and formalized agricultural processors in Côte d'Ivoire working directly in the cashew nut, cocoa, cassava, rice, livestock, market garden products (aubergine, tomato) and the use of renewable energy in agricultural equipment will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will be an asset. This includes, among others, digitalisation, information technology and agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • RDC
    • Only applications from agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and formalized agricultural processors in the Democratic Republic of Congo that are directly involved in the coffee, rice and palm oil/palm kernel sectors will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will be an asset. This includes, among others, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Liberia
    • Only proposals from registered agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and agricultural processors in Liberia working directly in the rice, cassava, palm oil, vegetable/horticulture, livestock and feed production sectors will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will also be considered. This includes, but is not limited to, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Malawi
    • Only proposals from registered Malawian agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and agricultural processors working directly in the rice, pulses and oilseeds, horticulture and tree crop sectors will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will also be considered. This includes, but is not limited to, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Mauritania
    • Only applications for funding from agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and formalised agricultural processors in Mauritania who work directly in the livestock and agricultural sector(s) will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will be an asset. This includes, among others, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Niger
    • Only applications for funding from agricultural cooperatives, producer groups will be accepted and from formalised agricultural processors in Niger who work directly in the small-scale irrigation sector(s). Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will be an asset. This includes, among others, digitisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Senegal
    • Only applications for funding from agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and formalized agricultural processors in Senegal that work directly in the rice, millet, maize, horticulture, cereals, fruit and vegetables and sorghum sector(s). Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will be an asset. This includes, among others, digitisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Tanzania
    • Only proposals from registered agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and agricultural processors in Tanzania working directly in the value chains of horticulture, cotton, coffee, edible oilseeds (sunflower and palm oil) and cereals (maize and rice) will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will also be considered. This includes, but is not limited to, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Uganda
    • Only proposals from registered agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and agricultural processors in Uganda working directly in the coffee, maize, rice, cassava, vegetable oil (including palm oil), cotton, shea nuts and dairy sectors will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development will also be considered. This includes, but is not limited to, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.
  • Zambia
    • Only proposals from registered agricultural cooperatives, producer groups and agricultural processors in Zambia working directly in the priority sector(s) of the oilseeds, dairy, rice, fisheries and aquaculture value chain will be accepted. Innovative approaches to agricultural and economic development related to these value chains will have an additional advantage. This includes, but is not limited to, digitalisation, information technology, agricultural solutions using renewable energy.

  • Applications may not exceed 250,000 $ US.
Successful proposals must
  • Have a clearly defined market opportunity to increase revenues that can increase revenues.
  • Have a clearly defined plan on how they can increase income and revenue in 2-4 years.
  • Be able to make significant cash or in-kind contributions to the project.
  • Be able to have a direct impact on hundreds of people and community members.
  • Be able to identify a pathway for growth after the USADF grant ends.
  • Particular attention will be given to applications that incorporate innovative strategies for using new approaches and technologies, including complementary financial and IT technologies.
  • Special attention will also be given to women-owned organisations and applications that promote youth.
Criterion
  • The organisation must demonstrate that it has been working successfully for at least 2 years, has at least 200 active members or suppliers and has the capacity to use grant funds effectively.
  • Ownership and management must agree on the problem to be solved and commit to making it work for their community.
  • The organisation must have basic functional management and financial controls for at least 2 years to demonstrate its ability to account for USADF funds.
  • The organisations should be owned and run by Africa.
