The John Templeton Foundation funds research and catalyzes conversations that inspire wonder and awe in people. The Foundation's funding areas define its philanthropic priorities and advance its aspiration to be a global catalyst for discoveries that contribute to human flourishing. The Foundation welcomes grant applications to support cutting-edge research and high-impact public engagement programmes in these areas.

  • Development of the character's virtues
    • The Character Virtue Development funding area supports research and catalyzes conversations that seek to advance the science and practice of character, focusing on moral, performance, civic and intellectual virtues such as humility, gratitude, curiosity, diligence and honesty.
  • Culture and global perspectives
    • The Culture and Global Perspectives funding area supports work that seeks to better understand the role of culture in life, how cultures change and how religions, values, customs and institutions can help address global challenges.
  • Life Sciences
    • The Life Sciences funding area supports projects that seek new and fundamental information about the meaning and significance of life processes, through which the Foundation can better understand humanity's place in nature.
  • Mathematical and physical sciences
    • In the Mathematics and Physical Sciences funding area, they support research aimed at illuminating fundamental concepts of physical reality. The Foundation also explores the interaction between these sciences and the wider human experience.
  • Humanities
    • The Humanities funding area seeks to fund research that addresses broad questions about human nature, religion and spirituality, flourishing and other fundamental aspects of the human experience.
    • Public engagement
    • The public engagement funding area supports content projects that include video, audio, public events and print. In addition, they seek proposals that support the next generation of thought leaders, generate sustainable courses and programmes at leading universities.
  • Philosophy & Theology
    • The Philosophy and Theology funding area supports research and catalyses conversations that promise to draw on the wisdom contained in the world's philosophical and theological traditions to improve understanding of the world and how to live well in it.
  • Individual freedom and free markets
    • The Individual Freedom and Free Markets funding area supports education, research and awareness-raising projects that promote individual freedom, free markets, free competition and entrepreneurship.
Eligibility criteria

The John Templeton Foundation funds charitable entities that operate within and outside the United States. On rare occasions, the Foundation may fund individuals and for-profit companies doing charitable work that is consistent with tax-exempt status.
