Agate Research Grants Programme - Africa

Applicants are now invited to submit their applications to the Agate research grants programme to support researchers in their projects.

Information on financing
  • The maximum budget is AUD 10,000 for one year.
  • The research grant may be allocated up to the budget submitted, but may be less than the initial amount requested.
  • Start of the project: The research project must begin no later than 6 months after the initial award and last no longer than one year from that date.
Use of funds
  • Stipends, analysis costs, fieldwork, small equipment, including software, conference costs for presenting research results funded by Agate, publication costs, bench costs, other research costs with justification.
Funds cannot be used for
  • Computer equipment, bench fees, conference registration fees unrelated to the current project, travel expenses for conferences, departmental overheads/expenses, access fees, medical insurance, excess baggage, expenses relating to accompanying dependants and expenses incurred by project participants not associated with the applicant organisations.
Potential winners
  • The programme is open to all researchers based in African universities who meet the eligibility criteria.
Eligibility criteria
  • Applicants must be citizens of an African country
  • Applicants must have obtained a doctorate within the last 10 years
  • Candidates may not submit more than one application per round.
  • Applicants who received grants in 2021 are not eligible.
  • Students cannot apply but are eligible for the Student Scholarship Fund
  • The subject of the research can be any topic in the earth and planetary sciences.
  • The online application form for a grant programme proposal must be completed and sent with all the requested documents before the application deadline.
  • No more than one grant will be awarded per organisation
  • This year, an additional grant will be awarded to a WAXI-affiliated project, excluding WAXI module leaders, but you do NOT need to be a WAXI partner to apply for an Agate research grant.
