Areas of interest

This annual essay competition is organised to harness the energy, creativity and initiative of the world's youth in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development. It also aims to inspire society to learn from young minds and reflect on how each of them can make a difference in the world.

Themes

Their values determine how they think and act, and they shape the society in which they live. What values do you hold dear? How can you best live your life in accordance with these values, and in doing so, what kind of society do you hope to create?

Price details

The following prizes will be awarded in the Children's and Youth categories respectively:

  • 1st Prize : Certificate, prize of 100,000 yen (approximately 840 $ US in February 2022) and gift ... 1 participant
  • 2nd Prize : Certificate, 50,000 yen prize (approximately 420 $ US in February 2022) and gift ... 3 participants
  • 3rd prize: Certificate and gift ... 5 participants
  • Honourable Mention: Certificate and gift ... 25 participants
  • Please note:
    • Winners of the 1st to 3rd prizes will be invited to the winners' get-together, which will be held online.
    • Additional prizes (Best School Award, School Incentive Award) will be awarded where appropriate.
    • All winners will be announced on 31 October 2022 (Japan time) on this website. Certificates and gifts will be mailed to the winners in December 2022.
    • They are unable to respond to individual requests concerning the results of the competition.
Eligibility criteria

All nationalities can take part from anywhere in the world.

Criteria
  • Essays may be submitted by anyone under the age of 25 (as of 15 June 2022) in one of the following age categories:
    • Children (under 14)
    • Young people (aged 15 to 25)
  • Essays must be 700 words or less in English or French, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese. Essays must be typed, with your name and the title of the essay included at the top of the first page.
  • There are no specific formatting rules (font style, size, line spacing, etc.). However, essays must be submitted in MS Word (DOC / DOCX) or PDF format. In addition, the size of your essay file must be 2 MB or less.
  • Teachers and youth leaders can submit a collection of essays from their class or group by creating a "school/organisation participant account" on the online registration page.
  • Only one entry per person is accepted.
  • They are not in a position to confirm acceptance of the tests.
  • Essays must be original and unpublished. Plagiarised entries will be rejected.
  • Essays must be written by a single person. Co-authored essays will not be accepted.
  • The copyright for the essays entered will be transferred to the organiser.
