"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Global Cleantech Challenge

NGIF Industry Grants, in collaboration with the International Gas Union, has launched a $10 million global clean technology challenge.

Important dates :

Deadline: 25-Apr-2023

Name of donor : NGIF Capital

The challenge is a call for funds for energy startups from around the world with clean technology solutions to come to Canada to access grants, technology validation for product market fit and future energy customers.

The Global Cleantech Challenge will allow the NGIF Industry Grants to provide funding to its 14 participating energy companies to support the development and demonstration of new clean technologies around the world. Each demonstration project undertaken in Canada is eligible to receive up to CAD 1 million, which represents up to 50 % of a project's eligible expenses.

NGIF Industry Grants accept applications from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and global start-ups proposing solutions that can create value and mitigate environmental impacts in the production, transportation, distribution and end use of natural gas in Canada.

Main areas of intervention

  • The objective of this funding competition, which focuses on gaseous energy production (upstream), transmission (midstream), distribution and end-use applications (downstream), is to advance advanced clean technologies.
    • Responsibly sourced natural gas
      • Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS)
      • Methane mitigation
      • Energy efficiency
      • Emissions monitoring
      • Use of residual heat
      • Water management
    • Alternative gases
      • Hydrogen
      • Renewable natural gas
    • Natural gas applications
      • Heat and electricity production
      • Natural gas heat pumps

    • Canadian Natural Resources
    • Cutbank Dawson Gas Resources Limited (a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation)
    • Embedded perpetual energy
    • PETRONAS Energy Canada Limited
    • Tidewater Midstream and Infrastructure Limited
    • Shell Canada Limited
    • Tourmaline Oil Corporation
Eligibility criteria
  • The competition is open to Canadian and international small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including technology development startups.
  • New technologies that improve the environmental and economic performance of the gas energy industry.
  • Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or higher technologies. If TRL 6 is imminent, the latest TRL 5 technologies will be considered.
  • Canadian and international small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are not subsidiaries and independent technology development companies with fewer than 500 employees.
  • Canadian and international technology development start-ups that are independent, non-subsidiary technology development companies that employ fewer than 100 employees, generate less than C$25 million in annual revenues and focus on the development and scale-up of pre-commercial technologies.

Leveraging trusted partners for funding

  • NGIF IG has working relationships with other federal and provincial funding agencies across Canada. In some cases, NGIF IG may have the opportunity to share applicants' proposals with trusted partners and explore opportunities to leverage funding available from these organizations.
