"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Area(s) of interest

AWDF believes that for the African women's movement to thrive, endure and have an impact, different types of organisation are essential. To help us better serve these movements, they want to deepen their understanding of their key issues, trends, priorities and aspirations and how they can best respond to them.

If you are committed to feminist principles, have a good knowledge of the different entities of the African feminist movement and understand the ecosystem in which these entities work, they would like to hear from you.

AWDF believes that for the African women's movement to thrive, endure and have impact, different types of organisation are essential. They recognise that movements come in all shapes, sizes and colours and are not homogenous; and that entities have different roles in contributing to gender justice and social transformation. Their strategy is to ensure that they engage meaningfully with these diverse constituents. To help us better serve these movements, they want to deepen their understanding of their key issues, trends, priorities and aspirations and how they can best respond to them.

  • AWDF has a new strategic framework (2023-2033)
  • At the heart of the new strategic framework is a commitment and desire to be more movement-centred
  • To do this, the team wants to deepen the connection and understanding of different entities (individual activists, non-traditional actors and collectives, community-based organisations and NGOs, and 'large-scale' NGOs).
  • This assignment will build on and extend the thinking that the team has already done in the context of a collaborative cross-programme initiative.
  • In particular, this work will feed into strategies of resourcing and agency and resilience, as well as strategies of solidarity and care, knowledge and voice, and impact and learning.

Purpose of the consultation

  • The aim of the council is to help the resourcing team, the agency and resilience team and other programme teams to understand and develop appropriate strategies for partnering and accompanying different entities within the movement, including: individuals; non-formal/emerging non-traditional actors and collectives; CBOs and NGOs; and national/regional partners and networks working at scale. Note that the classification is fluid or rigid and that entities can move between them and learn from each other
  • Over the next 10 years, they want to be able to say that AWDF's support to these entities has brought about changes that have enabled them and the movement as a whole to thrive and endure, and to have an impact.
  • They want to be open, curious, nuanced and flexible in their thinking and acting.

Work Management - Timelines, Budget

  • Inter-programme working group
  • Monitoring and management
  • Schedule - to start as soon as possible (March 2023) to May 2023
  • Budget approx. 20,000 USD
  • Expected number of days: 40 days in total (approximately 10 days per type of entity.

Approach

  • The first three bullets are what you/consultant are exploring and provide comments and ideas based on your experience. Bullets 4 to 7 are the issues they would like to see explored with the entities. They want an approach that gives a clear understanding of the individual entities and what the sum of the parts looks like.
  • The approach will be co-developed with the selected consultants but is likely to include :
    • A framing conversation at the start
    • Some desk research on how funds/others approach working with different entities
    • talk to selected "movement" actors/entities (mainly those not already connected to AWDF)
    • Participatory session(s) with entities with a cohort of different entities less AWDF
    • Participatory session(s) with the programme team to hear the results of the consultation and connect the team to selected entities for questions/answers/conversation
    • Input from consultant(s) on resourcing, agency and resilience strategies to ensure that they reflect what has emerged from the process and are fit for purpose

Key skills/skills

  • AWDF seeks to understand the entities individually and collectively. They welcome applications for work on one, two, three or all four groups of entities. Their final decision will be based on what best enhances their understanding of each entity group.
  • As such, their ideal 'consultant(s)' is a person or team who :
    • Have a commitment to the AWDF values of feminist leadership, accountability, diversity, respect and solidarity.
    • Are integrated and have a good knowledge of the different entities of the African feminist movement and understand the ecosystem in which these entities work
    • Bringing a participatory approach to working with the team
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and a flexible approach
    • Can demonstrate project management, execution and delivery skills
    • Proven ability to work to tight deadlines
    • Fluent in French (desirable)
    • Experience in strategy development (desirable).
