The focus for the selection of the Mo Ibrahim 2023 Fellow is on the Bank's five core areas (Lighting and Powering Africa; Feeding Africa; Industrialising Africa; Integrating Africa and Improving the Quality of Life of African People). Key competencies include first class professional experience in the private sector and strong policy analysis skills at all levels and the ability to execute models.

Details
  • During their 12-month programmes, fellows develop technical and leadership skills, while contributing directly to research and policy design. A special feature of the programme is the opportunity to benefit from direct mentoring by the leaders of the host organisations.
  • Fellows also become members of the Now Generation Network (NGN), through which they continue to contribute their skills and ideas to building a better Africa.
Duties and responsibilities :
  • The fellow will also have the following responsibilities
    • Design, develop and help implement innovative approaches to various strategic issues important to the Bank's mission and objectives, based on international best practice.
    • Undertake research and analysis on existing and emerging strategies, programmes and policy areas relevant to the Bank, as required.
    • Assist in the monitoring and analysis of the implementation of various Bank Group initiatives and the regular work programme, and prepare briefs, memos and other documents that convey in non-technical terms the likely impact;
    • Participate in high-level discussions and contribute to the preparation of meetings and missions of the President; and
    • Carry out any other tasks assigned by the relevant senior staff in the President's Office.
Information on funding

Each year, three fellows have the opportunity to work in the executive offices of the AfDB (Abidjan), ECA (Addis Ababa) or ITC (Geneva), with a stipend of US$100,000.

Eligibility criteria
  • The scholarship is aimed at young professionals, mid-career individuals and/or new managers. The Fellow must :
    • Be a national of an African country, residing anywhere in the world;
    • Not be an active, non-active, retired or separated member of staff of the Bank;
    • Not having a close family relationship with an active or non-active staff member, such as mother, father, sister and brother;
    • Government officials, active military personnel and political party leaders are not eligible;
    • The age limit is forty (40) years for men and women and forty-five (45) years for women with children;
    • have outstanding academic credentials supported by a minimum of a Master's degree from a recognised institution in the fields of banking, business, economics or other social sciences, finance, international development or any other discipline relevant to the Bank's activities;
    • Have relevant and demonstrable work experience, strong communication skills, demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work with others;
    • At least 7 (seven) years of work experience relevant to the Bank's activities;
    • Demonstrate proven leadership and consulting skills;
    • Experience in strategic planning, project management and execution;
    • Experience in policy formulation and the development and implementation of new strategies and procedures;
    • Demonstrate a strong ability to analyse and interpret financial and other data;
    • Excellent written and oral presentation skills;
    • Demonstrate the ability to communicate and interact with officials at all levels of government and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community;
    • Demonstrate the ability to motivate teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
