"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Areas of interest
They are looking for leaders who reflect the communities they serve and bring a deep understanding of the issues to their work as they design solutions with and for their communities. They strongly encourage leaders from around the world who identify as Black, Indigenous or a person of colour to apply for the Fellowship.
Echoing Green Fellows connect through their experiences, whether they are working on access to education across Michigan, digital equity in Accra, environmental justice in Brazil or indigenous sovereignty around the world. Together, they strive to build a world that has not yet existed: a future free of racism and its profound consequences, where all people can flourish.
Guiding principles
The Echoing Green community is multi-generational, multi-racial, geographically diverse and cross-class. Through collective action and a multi-sectoral approach, they believe they can make faster progress towards dismantling oppressive systems around the world. The following principles guide the work.
Echoing Green helps managers to :
  • Build and move power. They support grassroots leaders who disrupt the status quo by changing power dynamics. The best innovators use their clear understanding of the problem to develop the sharpest solutions. They look for leaders who show how their idea will transfer power to the people most affected by their company's results.
  • Intersectional approaches to resources. Trying to understand inequality through a single identity can lead to a misunderstanding of its impact and exclude people from solutions.
  • Feed the radical imagination. The community is inspired by the idea that collectively they can help build a world that doesn't yet exist - where everyone can flourish. Radical leaps of imagination can fuel social movements and transformational change.
Eligibility criteria
  • Applicant eligibility
    • Applicants for the Echoing Green scholarship must be aged 18 or over by 28 February 2022.
    • To be eligible for the scholarship and to participate fully in the programmes and support offers, you must be able to communicate competently in English. Support throughout the Echoing Green scholarship is offered in English.
    • They use the term "original founder" to describe people who have launched or are launching an organisation that is their original idea. You cannot have held an executive position within the organisation after it was founded. To qualify, you must be a leader with decision-making authority within the organisation and be either :
      • a single founder or
      • a leading founder within a team of people who have created the organisation.
    • To be eligible for an Echoing Green scholarship, applicants must be the key decision-maker and have ultimate authority over the growth and strategic vision of your organisation.
    • If you are selected for an Echoing Green scholarship, you may have other professional responsibilities, but you must work full-time, defined here as 40 hours a week, on the work described in your scholarship application, and it must remain your main professional priority.
  • Eligibility of the organisation
    • Organisations that are independent but have fiscal sponsors are eligible for the Echoing Green grant as long as the fiscal sponsor has no authority over the work and decision-making of the organisation.
    • To be eligible for an Echoing Green award, you must be able to make and act on the organisational decisions of your choice. If other organisations or entities manage or hold decision-making power for your proposed organisation, you may not be eligible. Organizations that are independent but have fiscal sponsors may be eligible as long as the fiscal sponsor has no authority over the work and decision-making of the organization.
    • Echoing Green is looking for applicants who need funding to launch or develop their organisations. They generally describe start-up organisations or ideas as those that :
      • have worked with full-time staff for less than five years, or
      • still need resources to grow and sustain their business.
    • According to the US Internal Revenue Service, Echoing Green may not distribute funds to organisations whose primary purpose is lobbying. Lobbying is defined as activities designed to support specific political candidates, specific political parties or to induce action on specific bills. Issue advocacy, defined as the attempt to bring about political action using methods such as civic education and public campaigning, is not considered lobbying.
    • To be eligible for an Echoing Green bursary, the organisation cannot engage in recruitment, promotion or conversion for a religious faith specific to your constituency. If your organisation's work has a spiritual element or works with existing faith communities, but does not promote or recruit on behalf of that faith, you may be eligible.
