"The most important thing, I think, is to have led people to have confidence in themselves, to understand that at last they can sit down and write about their development, write about their happiness and say what they want. And at the same time, to feel what the price is for happiness".

Area(s) of interest

Unique opportunity for early career researchers! PhD students and post-doctoral researchers specialising in climate and sustainability policy and governance studies can apply for a short-term research visit to some of Europe's leading universities in this field.

The fellowship is part of "The European Green Deal: Governing the EU's Transition to Climate Neutrality and Sustainability" (GreenDeal-NET), a Jean Monnet Network under the EU's Erasmus+ programme. GreenDeal-NET provides a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration on education, research and debate in the field of European climate governance and sustainability. Its main objective is to advance academic research and teaching on the EU's transition to climate neutrality.

In addition, it aims to engage academics, policy makers and the general public on these issues. The researchers selected for the fellowship are expected to make a significant contribution to the network with their research results. This call is the first of three rounds of calls for GreenDeal-NET short-term research fellows. Between three and five researchers will be funded. The next calls will be launched in 2024 and 2025.

Objectives
  • It specifically targets researchers working on topics related to the European Green Deal and its governance issues.
  • By undertaking the fellowship, researchers will become part of a growing network of researchers and academics working in the field and contribute to the exchange of knowledge and cross-fertilisation of ideas.
  • Each fellow will have the opportunity to spend up to four weeks working on his or her research project at a partner university or research institute and to connect with other academics and research communities in his or her field, to conduct data collection and/or to gain experience with a particular research method.
Conditions
  • The research visit can last a maximum of 4 weeks (28 days).
  • Each fellow will receive a grant of up to 800 EUR to cover travel and accommodation costs during their stay. Proof of expenditure will be required to receive the grant.
  • Researchers can choose to carry out their research visit at one of the 12 European universities that form the core of the GreenDeal-NET network, or at another academic or research institution associated with the project.
  • Only one grant can be obtained per researcher.
Eligibility criteria
  • Early career researchers from around the world can apply if they are working on topics related to the European Green Deal and the complex governance challenges it poses.
  • Doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in the early stages of their careers are eligible to receive the scholarship.
